I: BASEL – TOULOUSE

Is it getting warmer, or is it really evident that we have migrated farther south? Oh, happiness! The sun actually warms my face at this latitude!! It is not merely a muted source of light that barely penetrates blankets upon blankets of winter clouds, giving the impression that it is 4:15 pm all day long, until real darkness begins to set in at 4:30 pm.

Yes, the time had come to say goodbye to Switzerland, sweet land of chocolate. That unmistakable migratory yearning to move on, to follow the sun, had set in at a surprisingly accelerated pace. Although it was the end of October, you could really feel the days getting depressingly shorter. So, we did what any sane bird would do—we loaded up La Cuca and Rogelio like pack mules and split for the south. For those who have not been informed, La Cuca is our veteran 9-seater Mercedes van that we acquired this past summer in Berlin, and Rogelio is our little miracle car that was bestowed upon us merely three days before our departure date, and for the nice price of 224 francs we couldn’t go wrong…..All of us were ecstatic with the purchase, aside from the previous owner of the red Subaru, who seemed to be suffering from nervous pangs of guilt brought on by his concern for our safety (or perhaps for our lives) once he learned of our destination.

El subaru

“SENEGAL???” he choked, eyes widening. But – the belt … the brakes … the motor….I’m selling this car as is, you know. No guarantees!”

Perhaps he envisioned us crawling through the Sahara Spaceballs-style, vultures circling overhead and all, after having been betrayed by the beat up motor. But among the many lessons to be learned here with los Chantos, we know to be grateful for life’s little gifts, to enjoy the present, and to worry about tomorrow – well, tomorrow.

Aurelio controlandolo todo
Aurelio controlandolo todo

Up until now the vehicles have behaved beautifully (for what they’re worth) and have gotten us from concert to concert. We began at the end, starting out with a farewell concert in the NT area in Basel, Switzerland, where the public could pay the entrance fee with either 15 francs or a creative donation for us to take to Africa. For example some people paid their entrance with a radio, cell phones, a flute, a discman, etc. From there we headed into French territory, landing in Lyon for a concert at the very cool Furib-Arts bar

where the hospitality and ambience was so warm that we stayed on for two nights. During the day we took advantage of our time to tour a bit of old town Lyon and to play in the street. Next we headed to Damien’s (El Niño’s) hometown of Lacapelle-Marival where we spent a few cozy days at his sweet mother’s house tucked away in the southern French countryside. We enjoyed REAL home-cooked ‘mom food’, the warmth of a real bed, a shower, and a change of clothes (well, I can’t speak for everybody), and the ever amusing drama between el Niño and his mother, bless her heart. “Why don’t you get a real job? Why don’t you cut your hair? The members of your new music group are all so dirty. I liked your other group better. Why don’t you go back with them?” All the while el Niño, instead of arguing, would play the piano,

louder and louder, more and more eloquently, both registering and tuning out his mother at the same time, until he couldn’t take any more criticism and would backlash for her to get off his case and why can’t she see and appreciate that he is very happy with his life? And why can’t she understand that he sees through the bullshit façade of inserting oneself into society’s systematic merry-go-round of work/consumption/debt/work/consumption/debt, and why can’t she be happy for him that he is lucky to live from his passion, and thus is passionate about life, is part of a very loving family of nomads that believe in simplicity and therefore experience more freedom than your average earthling (boggling that this concept is so boggling for so many people, isn’t it?), etc. And after seeing this interaction I understood better the nagging and criticism that we receive from our loved ones, which feels and sounds so much like disapproval of our lifestyle at times, but simply is their way of expressing their concern for our well-being. Thus, their words shouldn’t be taken badly; on the contrary they should be taken with lots of love, patience, and understanding.

Onward.

Bar El Camino

After a concert in El Cabaret Clandestino in Livernon, we headed to Toulouse for a night of jamming in El Rincon Chileno, and the next night we landed in El Camino bar where los Chantos played a kickass show for a very friendly and animated public. Lisa set up a table to sell her handmade jewelry along with the band’s CDs, Noemi and Xelo are snapping some great photos and videos of the concert, and I’m feeling inspired as well as I let my fingers fly across the keys of my computer, writing of our adventures up to date. Only Aurelio seems to not feel very motivated, and he actually slept through the first half of his solo in ‘Mama Said’, having missed his intro. Poor pup, he does tend to overwork himself and deserves his downtime too.

The only minor mechanical mishap that we’ve encountered up to now (knock on wood) was in Lyon, when we woke up the morning after the concert with a busted tire on the trailer that Rogelio is lugging. Good thing the wheel held out on the highway until we got situated in the city! Now if everything continues to flow, we should be in Barcelona in a few days’ time ….
